Is a Councillor for Antrim South East and is currently the Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Alliance Sustainability spokesperson

Having been brought up in North Belfast and gone to school through the worst of the troubles Alan states that he is determined that his children will not live through similar experiences and he joined the Alliance party because he believes only it is committed to working for a genuinely shared and tolerant society in Northern Ireland.

He studied Chemistry at Cambridge University and developed a deep concern about the effects that man's activities has on the environment. Global warming and climate change issues may have lost their headline positions because of the economic crisis but Alan believes that though policies like the "Green New Deal" there are opportunities to make our future more sustainable.

He has used his Chemistry Degree to teach in Grammar schools here in N.I. but moved into industry after nearly a decade and with accountancy training and an MBA has held management positions in the Health Service in the USA and UK and has been a commercial manager and company secretary in the private sector. Now he splits his time between local politics in Antrim Borough Council and being self employed.

Cllr Lawther has a wife and 2 daughters. His wife works in the Health Service and his daughters go to school in Templepatrick and Ballyclare. The younger daughter has just been through the disastrous and stressful selection process to move on the secondary schooling next year.
